The Beginner Silversmithing course is 15 to 16 hours in length, divided into 5 sessions of 3 hours each or 4 sessions of 4 hours each, and class size is limited to 6 students with two instructors.
Our Beginner Silversmithing courses are very popular and courses, once posted, are usually filled in 1-2 days. If you would like to be on an email notification list when spots open up, please email Eileen at [email protected]
Course dates and times vary throughout the year with a break over July and August. Usual timeframes for the beginner course are Monday daytime (10am-2pm), Thursday daytime (10am-2pm), Monday or Wednesday evenings (630-930pm), Sunday daytime (9am-1pm) and other times based on volunteer instructor availability. The course is only available to Club members (membership is $20 adult or $25 family) and cost for the course is $95. This cost does not include the cost of any silver you would need (typically $40 to $45), which is based on the troy ounce cost at the time of purchase. All equipment and tools needed are provided at the Club (370 King Street West –second floor of Tett Centre). A course outline is emailed to everyone once the class participants are confirmed
No experience working with silver or copper is required. We will teach you how to cut, shape, sand, solder and finish your pieces to create bezel set rings, pendants and more. Anyone wishing to take the course:
Must commit to the full duration of the course and come prepared for each class by reading material circulated in advance;
Must wear closed toe shoes and tie back long hair for all classes along with additional safety precautions;
Must meet a set of minimum competencies for passing the course in order to ensure their safety during classes and open shop times, and to prevent damage to a number of extremely expensive tools that are provided by the Club (including the flexshaft, rolling mill, disc cutters, etc);
Students must be a minimum of 12 years of age. Students 12-14 years must take the course with a parent or guardian, and students 15 years of age or older can take the course independently.
If correctives lenses are required, please bring them as we work with fine detail;
If you have special needs, please contact Eileen at 613-384-4439 prior to registering to discuss whether or not these needs can be accommodated.
