Courses
See the current Newsletter for details. Shop Instructors The club has attracted a diverse group of talented folks who don't
mind volunteering their time to help teach the tricks of the trade to
new members. We greatly appreciate each contribution from every member who helps to make the club a continuing success. Bob Shandala
After rock hounding for a few years Bob decided to do some lapidary work and cut some of the beautiful stones he collected. The cabochons and different shaped stones turned out very well. This prompted Bob to take a silversmithing course at George Brown College in Toronto so he could set some of the stones. That was more than 20 years ago. He now assists as an instructor for the silversmithing courses.
Eileen Moss
Eileen has been a shop instructor longer than she can remember when. She trained under Cliff Walker (still a club member at the age of 94) and Harold Bullock (now passed away). She got hooked on lapidary and has stay hooked ever since. She started selling her stone jewellery by sharing a table with Harold Bullock at our gem show held annually in October and has never looked back. Eileen teaches lapidary naturally, allowing each student to pursue their own individual interests with guidance as needed. This has worked well, with young and old alike producing fine lapidary works. Eileen is the Vice-President and serves on the KLMC Executive Board. Dave Blair
Dave started collecting rocks as a child. He joined club in the spring of 2004 to learn how to cut and polish stones to put in his wood products. Now mainly cuts and polishes stone and sets it in silver wire for sale at the Kingston market and craft shows. He has worked in welding and soldering at a body shop and has learned silversmithing at the club. Dave is a lapidary instructor and as Shop Foreman serves on the KLMC Executive Board. Janet Ross
Janet has been busy teaching numerous silversmithing and casting courses at the
club. She completed the Beginner (October 2005) and
Experienced (January 2006) courses with vigor and talent and has confidently excelled as an instructor.David Shaw
Dave took one of our courses a few years ago. He already had some
background in the techniques and combine with his natural artistic
abilities he really impressed us with his creations. Dave is currently
apprenticing at a local jewellery store and has decided to pursue a
career in the field.Dave will be teaching some silversmithing courses in the future. Valerie Thomas Valerie
was the kid who always came home with a pocket full of rocks, and she
never outgrew the habit. She found KLMC in 1999, and knew she'd
found her people. It's the only place she can pull a rock out of
her pocket, and have someone say 'sweet'. She's a lapidary
instructor and silversmithing instructor.Vickie Campagnaro I
have taken various art classes my entire adult life but always went
back to making jewelry. When attending a "Gem Storm" a couple of years
ago I found out about silver smithing classes and have never looked
back. I started with the beginner classes and then wax casting
and then on to advanced silver smithing. I love to see the excitement
each time when new people create so I hope that I will continue to
teach classes going forward.Jessica Hedberg My
grandmother likes to recount how when I was a little thing I would come
home staggering under the weight of the rocks that were crammed in
every pocket on me...even the little one on the hip in jeans...I
dreamed of a career in geology, but went into the arts
instead...My grandfather's friends would bring me big chunks of jade
from surveying trips...anyone who knew me gifted me with little rocks.
I still have them all. I cabbed my first rock under Eileen's watchful eye
in February 2007 and took the beginner silver course when
I found out Bob would be there, as he was so kind and knowledgeable
whenever I asked him for assistance about some rock...I was so excited
by what I learned that I took every course I could afford! Advanced
with Shelley and splashcasting...that was fun, but I enjoy the
technical aspect of design...making the brooch back, chain
mail...I surprised myself at what I enjoy, but now I talk about it
to anyone who will listen and I am constantly plugging the club.Kerry Klassen
I was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba which must have something to do with
my fascination with rocks. Flin Flon is located on the Canadian Shield
so the outcrops are amazing. I spent many, many hours wandering around
these rocks as a kid. My favourite Christmas present was my rock tumber
when I was about 10 yrs old. No rock was left unpolished after that.
This set me up for my career in geology. I finished my
Geology/Geophysics degree in 1991 and have worked in a geochemistry lab
ever since.[Top]
