About the Club

Overview

The Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club provides a positive environment for local rockhounds, lapidary enthusiasts and silversmiths. Members gather to develop their interests, share information and ideas, and socialize with others interested in the earth sciences. The Club is very active. In addition to diverse monthly meetings, weekly lapidary instruction and frequent silversmithing courses are provided in our workshop.

Mission Statement

To promote and encourage the growth of all phases of our hobby (e.g. lapidary and silversmithing work, mineral, fossil and crystal collecting, etc.) for all interested.

Location

623 King Street West, Kingston, ON K7M2E7 (just across from Portsmouth Olympic Harbour)

History

The Club was founded in 1962.

Finance

The Club is a registered Non-Profit Organization.

Governing

The Club is run by the members for the members. The Executive Committee, consisting of volunteer members, meets regularly to discuss and implement Club activities. Many other members are also involved in making the Club a fun and successful organization.

Meetings

From October until April our general Meetings are usually held on the second Friday of every month. Every month is something different! It may be a guest speaker, a demonstration, a craft workshop, an auction or another fun event.

Field Trips

From May until September general Meetings are replaced by field trips that focus on collecting specimen or learning about geological history in Southeastern Ontario and Quebec.

The Workshop

From September until May our workshop is open during scheduled work times for lapidary and self-directed silversmithing. Introductory lapidary training is provided as needed by the workshop instructor. Shop fees are $2 per hour for adults, $1.50/hr for juniors (age 11-15; please note the minimum age to work in the shop is 11 years old).

Silversmithing courses for beginner and experienced students are run twice in the fall and twice in winter for five week (15 hour) sessions and cost $85. Each student pays for their own sterling silver at a price of $0.85 per gram. Students learn techniques that will allow them to become proficient enough to work independently during the above mentioned workshop hours.

Annual Gem & Mineral Show

Gem Storm takes place at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour in October each year. It is always a big hit with local residents and visiting tourists.

Library

The Club library is open during workshop hours and General Meetings. The Club subscribes to the Lapidary Journal (opens in new window). As well, there are many reference books for the lapidary arts, mineral collecting, identification and silversmithing.

Newsletter

The Streak Plate is the Club newsletter; it is published 5 times a year and provides information on upcoming events as well as informative articles about our hobby.

CCFMS Affiliation

The Club belongs to The Central Canadian Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CCFMS), an umbrella organization for mineral and lapidary clubs in Ontario.

Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club Members are able to participate in designated CCFMS Field Trips run by The Ontario Field Trippers Guide (OFTG). Members will need to get a membership card from our Membership Executive Stephen Watts, before attending any CCFMS/OFTG event.
